Types of Questions in Year 5 NAPLAN

     National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy or NAPLAN, is the crucial test that Australian students of Year 3, Year 5, Year 7, and Year 9 undertake every year in May. This test evaluates the numeric and literary skills of the students. This test consists primarily of 4 sections namely language conventions, writing, reading, and numeracy.

      In this post, we will discuss the types of questions that are a part of the Year 5 NAPLAN test,It is well-known to all that there is no substitute for practice.      Types of Questions in Year 5 NAPLAN

   The 4 sections of NAPLAN pose a variety of questions that expose the conceptual knowledge and understanding of students. Here are the main categories of questions that students have to answer when undertaking the Year 5 NAPLAN test. 

1.    Language Conventions

    This section entails punctuation, spelling, and grammatical questions. The format of the questions is generally multi-choice but there are also some questions that require students to complete the blanks. Students are required to demonstrate the level of knowledge that meets the minimum standards of writing, spelling, and grammar. There are several types of questions such as the following:

·    Questions that require the students to correct the spelling in a sentence, a text or on an illustration. For example, in the sentence, “He went to scool”, the students have to write the correct spelling of the incorrectly spelled word. In this case, the answer would be “school”.

·    Questions that test grammatical knowledge. In these questions, the students have to identify whether a word is a noun, an adjective, a verb, etc.

·    Some questions require the students to complete a sentence with the best-suited word. For example, “Does she have ___ pet?” In this question, the student has to choose the correct option from choices such as ‘a’, ‘if’, ‘an’, ‘the’, etc.

 

2.    Numeracy

    The numeracy section consists of concepts related to geometry, algebra, and statistics. It evaluates the reasoning, problem-solving and visual interpretation skills of the students.

·    There are questions related to addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. For example, students have to choose the correct option for the answer to.

3.    Writing

The writing section for Year 5 NAPLAN consists of one question that requires a narrative or persuasive response.

· An example of the writing prompt can be to write about “What is in the bag?” In response, the students have to formulate a story, plan out the sentences and check the structuring of the paragraphs. Additionally, they have to pay attention to spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

· “Which place is better to live in: a city or a country?” This is another example of the type of questions in the writing section of NAPLAN.
 
4.    Reading

In this section, students are required to comprehend a passage. They must be able to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words, the characters, and the context. It evaluates the students’ ability to comprehend and understand written text. Students can be asked a mix of literal and inferential questions related to the text.

·  Students might be asked to select the main idea of the passage.

·  Additionally, they might be asked questions related to the reason a character took a particular course of action.
